Until the keynote address took place everyone was under the assumption that it wouldbe some sort of new UI that would put Ubuntu ahead of the competition. But sadly, it turned out to be a design for a new Smart TV! The announcement was about an Ubuntu-powered Smart TV, which will feature the much-dread

Imagine this - you are at an important meeting, and need to show some spreadsheets to your boss, but you realise you have forgotten the files at home! There is no time to go back, since that would take you at least an hour, so what else can you do? Why not just access your own computer from the Internet? Remote desktop is a concept that allows you to control one computer from the other, and this has been used for some time. However, setting up such system can prove to be somewhat complicat

I have to install RSTATD and SNMPD on some RedHat systems. How can I perform this ? Do I have to install some rpm's ? Taking them from where ? And how do I have to configure this ? Is there a way to test that the servers are working ? Sorry to ask so basic questions, but I am mainly an Oracle dba, so I have very few experience on installing and configuring Linux services.

Enter Your Password To Perform Administrative Tasks
I know that Linux is much more customizable than Windows regarding the system and kernel itself. Now in my other post, I wanted to find out if I can trigger the UAC prompt for certain tasks. Since doing so is nearly impossible or would be very difficult or illegal according to Microsoft's End User License Agreement, I was hoping that this task could be achieved in Linux. I am running Ubuntu 7.10 with the GNOME Desktop env

After last week's update fiasco, system running Fedora 10 seems to be back on track. By that, I mean everything is working pretty smoothly, although there's a few little issues I've yet to resolve: The main one, and the whole point of this topic, is trying to find out how I can change "Desktop" to "desktop" in the "Places" menu. Being an electronic engineering student, I've done what I consider to be good practice and started naming files and direct

Do I Need To Do Any Extra Setup For Audio / Video Output?
Since we already assumed you have an up and running linux installation, you most likely won't have to do any work in this area. Most modern distributions automatically configure X and audio for you, and there is a host of information on the web for configuring X. As far as audio goes, there are many different audio architectures available. We recommend choosing a distribution that uses ALSA (the advanced linux sound architecture) by default since it is the most powerful sound system and sup

For those who have been wondering about my slight absence from the forum, I've had, to be blunt, a catastrophic meltdown of all things vaguely useful on my PC at the end of the last week. Everything went down the drain, leaving me with no choice other than completely starting from scratch with a new OS installation. Being at university means my Windows XP discs were back home, so installing Windows is, for now, out of the question. Instead I decided to give this here Linux-malarky a go and,

Boot Error On Customized Kernel [solved]
Hey guys, I'm getting into some trouble on my newly compiled kernel. I had no issues compiling a kernel before but I'm getting booting issues. I guess it could be some type of SATA support issue since this is the first time I had a SATA drive. However, I'm very sure that I compiled SATA support right into the kernel instead of it being a module. This is my filesystem config:
# # File systems # CONFIG_EXT2_FS=m CONFIG_EXT2_FS_XATTR=y CONFIG_EXT2_FS_POSIX_ACL=y CONFIG_EXT2_FS

When And What Is Your First Linux Experience?
Hi All, I want to learn when and what is your first experience of linux? Mine is; 1996 first install of linux. 1995 first time I heard of linux. I remember how I was happy and how I was curious about linux. I was bored of Windows. It was not the OS I was dreaming of. It was not completely flexible. I was feeling that windows is not the edge of the computer tech. There are something wrong about windows. And Linux was like a dream for me.. I remember how I tried to get a linux distro. I remember

Strange Error When Trying To Install Fedora Core 9
Hi all, I tried to install Fedora Core 9 in a VmWare virtual machine under WinXP. I downloaded the DVD ISO image and proceeded with the installation. When the process was started since about a minute, the following error did show: "The file evince-2.22.1.1-1.fc9.i386.rpm cannot be opened. This is due to a missing file, a corrupt package or corrupt media" Fine, I told to myself, let's download the ISO image again, this time from a different server, just in case. No joy, same error
